The Circle as a Place
Synopsis
The Circle as a Place suggests a new perspective of seeing the past as a layer of the current time, therefore, the past as an active actor in the present, which therefore still be able to affect us. With this perspective, the importance of recognizing what happened in the past is emphasized.
With the positionality of the artists, Koreans in the Netherlands, the narrative of the work unfolds the story of how the Netherlands and the city Hague, especially the Hague convention in 1907, take a role in the colonization of Korea. This video hopes to deepen the understanding of the interconnection of one place to another, such as how the several events that happened in the Hague in 1907 became so affecting to the other side of the world.
The sound piece in this video is re-composed out of several Korean traditional shamanism music, which is usually used for consoling resentment of a ghost.
In the video, the Colonial history of Korea is metaphorized as a ghost. This video and sound is dedicated to summoning the colonial past and solacing the scar of colonialism, not only to Korean history but also to other (ongoing) colonial scars across the world
